Core techniques include color correction (white balance, exposure, tone mapping), noise reduction, sharpening, and clipping adjustments. Retouching may involve removing defects, smoothing skin, or object removal. Compositing combines multiple images, while content-aware tools help fill gaps after edits. Cropping and straightening refine composition. Non-destructive editing uses layers, masks, adjustment layers, and smart objects to preserve the original data.

Outputs are prepared for different media, with format choices such as JPEG for web, TIFF or PNG for print, and file formats tailored to professional workflows. Color management and consistent color spaces (sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto) are important.

Ethical considerations include consent and representation, especially in portrait work, as well as copyright and attribution. The field has evolved from chemical darkroom techniques to digital workflows, with software ranging from professional suites to open-source programs, and increasingly integrated AI-assisted features.
