Formbasert is a term used in information technology to describe approaches that rely on user input through forms. In Norwegian and other Scandinavian contexts, formbasert refers to methods that collect data or credentials via a web form rather than through alternative mechanisms such as basic authentication or token-based flows.

In the context of web security, formbasert autentisering (form-based authentication) is a common implementation. The user enters credentials into an HTML form, which is submitted to a server endpoint for validation. On successful authentication, the server typically creates a session and issues a session identifier, commonly stored in a cookie, to authenticate subsequent requests. This model contrasts with HTTP basic authentication, where credentials are sent with each request, or with token-based methods that issue a separate token for API access.

Key considerations for formbasert implementations include the use of transport security (TLS/HTTPS) to protect credentials in transit, protection against cross-site request forgery (CSRF) and cross-site scripting (XSS), and the management of sessions and cookies (such as SameSite attributes and secure flags). Additional security measures often involve account lockout policies, rate limiting, and, where appropriate, multifactor authentication to strengthen verification.

Beyond authentication, the term formbasert can also describe user interfaces that primarily rely on data entry forms for information submission and processing, common in content management systems, enterprise portals, and online data collection workflows. Overall, formbasert approaches emphasize structured data capture and interactive input through standardized form controls.
