The forearcsänkor have compact bodies about 40 to 60 centimeters long, with short limbs and thick, water-repellent fur. They possess large, curved claws suited to digging and a long, sensitive snout equipped with prominent whiskers. Coloration ranges from pale gray to rufous-brown, often with a darker dorsal stripe. Their eyes are relatively small, reflecting their primarily subterranean and nocturnal lifestyle.

Forearcsänkor occupy damp forested lowland areas and mangrove fringes within forearc basins. They construct intricate tunnel systems underground, with multiple chamber nests used for sleeping, food storage, and rearing young.
