Fogszabályozás, often translated as orthodontics, is a specialized field of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and correcting misaligned teeth and jaws. Its primary goal is to improve both the aesthetic appearance of the smile and the functional bite of the patient. Malocclusions, or bad bites, can range from crooked teeth to significant jaw discrepancies. These issues can lead to various problems including difficulty in cleaning teeth, increased risk of decay and gum disease, abnormal tooth wear, and jaw joint discomfort.

The process typically begins with a comprehensive examination, which may include dental records, X-rays, and impressions of the teeth. Based on this assessment, an orthodontist will formulate a treatment plan. This plan often involves the use of orthodontic appliances, commonly known as braces. Traditional braces consist of brackets attached to the teeth, connected by wires that are gradually adjusted to move the teeth into their desired positions.

In addition to traditional braces, modern orthodontics offers a variety of other treatment options. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are a popular alternative that uses a series of custom-made, transparent trays to gradually straighten teeth. Other appliances might be used to guide jaw growth in younger patients or to address specific bite issues. The duration of treatment varies significantly depending on the complexity of the case, but it typically lasts from a few months to a few years. After active orthodontic treatment, patients usually wear retainers to maintain the corrected position of their teeth.
