Flybasen is the Danish and Norwegian term for an air base, a military installation from which aircraft are operated, maintained, and supported. It serves as a hub for air power projection, training, and logistics and is integrated into national defense planning and, in many cases, allied operations through NATO or other partnerships.

A flybasen typically hosts one or more squadrons or wings, maintenance facilities, air traffic control, and support services. It coordinates aircraft dispersal to reduce vulnerability, mission planning, and communications networks. Some flybasen bases host temporary or rotating aircraft from allied forces.

Key facilities include runways, taxiways, hangars, control towers, fuel and munitions storage, repair depots, logistics support, medical and security services, housing and recreation for personnel, and training ranges or simulators. The base often includes workshops for airframe and avionics maintenance, as well as administrative offices and logistics hubs to sustain operations.

Operations at a flybasen encompass routine maintenance, pre-flight and post-flight checks, refueling, armament handling, and air-defence coordination. The base is managed by a military command structure, with specialized units responsible for security, supply, and mission planning, while civilian authorities may be involved in environmental and safety oversight.

Historically, air bases evolved from simple airfields into purpose-built facilities with hardened aircraft shelters and extensive support networks. During the Cold War they gained strategic importance for power projection and alliance interoperability. Today many bases balance national defense needs with community impact, environmental considerations, and modernization, including integration of unmanned systems and advanced air traffic management.
