Faceaware refers to techniques in digital imaging and computer vision that automatically detect faces and facial features within images or video in order to apply targeted processing. The core capability typically relies on facial landmark detection, which locates features such as eyes, nose, mouth, and the jawline, and sometimes eyebrows and facial contours. By identifying these elements, software can adjust specific regions while preserving overall image structure.

In consumer software, face-aware tools are common in image editing and smartphone cameras. A well-known example is a face-aware feature in image editing suites that provides dedicated controls for altering eye shape and size, mouth width, or overall face shape, often via sliders. Such tools are frequently integrated into broader filters or liquify-style editors, enabling more natural-sounding retouching than global adjustments.

In photography and graphics workflows, face-aware processing enables tasks such as cosmetics simulation, gaze correction, morphing, or selective sharpening that target facial regions. Real-time variants are used in video conferencing and augmented reality to align overlays with detected facial features.

Technical approaches vary but generally involve machine learning models or classical computer-vision detectors trained on annotated facial data.
