It is commonly delivered as part of cognitive-behavioral therapy, sometimes with pharmacotherapy adjuncts. The approach varies in intensity and duration but typically includes psychoeducation, homework assignments, and careful monitoring of distress.

Effectiveness is well supported by research, with exposure-based interventions producing substantial and durable reductions in symptoms across disorders. Risks include temporary distress and potential retraumatization if not carefully managed; professional guidance is essential, with attention to safety, consent, and patient readiness.
