estàtic

Estàtic is an adjective in Catalan that means static, at rest, or not changing. It comes from Latin staticus and Greek statikos, and is used across disciplines to denote lack of movement or variation, often in contrast with dinàmic (dynamic).

In physics and engineering, estàtic refers to the branch of mechanics known as statics, which studies bodies in equilibrium under applied forces. It emphasizes the balance of forces, moments, and reactions at supports, without considering motion or accelerations. Applications include civil engineering, architecture, and structural analysis, where loads such as weight, wind, or seismic forces are resolved to ensure stability and safety.

In electricity, electricitat estàtica describes charges at rest and the electrostatic forces between them. Phenomena such as triboelectric charging, static cling, and electrostatic attraction or repulsion arise from stationary charges, as opposed to current electricity where charges flow.

In computing and information technology, estàtic appears in terms such as analisi estàtica (static analysis) of software, where programs are examined without execution to detect potential errors. It also appears in memory management, with static storage allocation that reserves memory for variables for the duration of a program, in contrast with dynamic allocation.

The term is also used more generally to describe objects or processes that do not move or change position. The opposite of estàtic is dinàmic, used to denote motion or change.
