The term derives from Greek endon meaning inside and skopos meaning watcher; in Danish and Norwegian medical language, endoskopisk/endoskopiske is used to describe endoscopy-related procedures or findings.

Medical endoscopy encompasses both diagnostic and therapeutic activities. Gastrointestinal endoscopy includes gastroscopy, esophagoscopy, colonoscopy, and enteroscopy; endoscopic retrograde procedures (ERCP) and related interventions visualize and treat the digestive tract. Other domains include bronchoscopy (airways) and cystoscopy (bladder); arthroscopy and laparoscopy use endoscopic visualization to guide minimally invasive surgical maneuvers. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) combines endoscopy with imaging to assess organs adjacent to the gastrointestinal tract. Procedures can obtain tissue samples and perform interventions such as dilation, stent placement, polypectomy, clipping, and laser or thermal therapies. Endoscopy is also used in veterinary medicine and, outside medicine, in industry to inspect pipelines and machinery.

Equipment and technique involve rigid or flexible endoscopes equipped with light sources and cameras. Many modern devices are digital and may have working channels for biopsy forceps, snares, dilators, or therapeutic tools. Procedures are commonly performed under sedation or anesthesia and often on an outpatient basis, with imaging stored for analysis and documentation.

Risks include reaction to anesthesia, infection, bleeding, perforation, and instrument-related injury; overall risk depends on the procedure and patient factors. Accessibility limitations, inflammation, and anatomical variations may affect visibility and safety. Adequate training, sterile technique, and careful patient selection are essential for safe practice.

Historically, endoscopy evolved from early rigid instruments to fiber-optic and video-endoscopy, culminating in high-definition imaging and advanced therapeutic capabilities. Ongoing innovations include capsule endoscopy, enhanced visualization techniques, and minimally invasive therapeutic options that broaden diagnostic and treatment possibilities.
