EdgeConnectoren are a class of electrical connectors designed to mate with contacts along the edge of a printed circuit board (PCB) or module. They enable direct, space-efficient connections between boards and backplanes or enclosures. In Dutch usage, edge connectors are referred to as EdgeConnectoren and are commonly found in computer hardware, industrial equipment and embedded systems.

EdgeConnectoren typically consist of a PCB edge carrying a row of exposed, plated contact fingers that fit into a matching spring or pin-and-socket receptacle. The contact fingers are usually plated with hard gold or ENEPIG to withstand repeated mating cycles. Connectors may be right-angle or vertical, surface-mount or through-hole, and vary in the number of contacts and in pitch, ranging from a fraction of a millimeter to 2.0 mm or more.

Variants and configurations include card-edge connectors for expansion or interconnect between PCBs, and backplane-edge interfaces used in modular chassis. They are defined by electrical pitch, contact density and mechanical keying to ensure correct mating orientation and prevent misalignment.

Design considerations encompass signal integrity at high speeds, mating force and durability, board edge finish quality, and environmental resistance. Because the edge of the PCB bears the mating interface, consistent plating, edge chamfering and planarity are critical to reliable operation.

Applications include computer expansion cards, memory modules, industrial backplanes, and modular embedded systems. While standards exist for certain families (such as PCIe or legacy PCI card-edge interfaces), many EdgeConnectoren are implemented as vendor-specific solutions optimized for size, speed, and mounting style.
