Duffle, in modern usage, commonly refers to two related items: a large, cylindrical bag used for travel and sports, and a heavy woolen overcoat known as a duffle coat. The terms derive from Duffel, a town in Belgium where a thick, coarse woolen cloth called duffel was once produced. The cloth gave its name to both the bag style and the coat, with the fabric and its associated products spreading widely in Europe and beyond.

Duffle bags are typically barrel-shaped with a wide top opening and a simple closure. Historically made from duffel cloth, they evolved into durable travel and gym bags, often featuring a top drawstring or flap closures, reinforced handles, and leather or reinforced nylon accents. Modern versions use materials such as canvas, nylon, or polyester, and may include internal pockets, wheels, or adjustable straps. They are valued for their capacity, lightweight feel, and rugged durability, making them popular for travel, sports kits, outdoor activities, and military or work deployments.

The duffle coat is a heavy wool overcoat distinguished by a hood and a toggle fastener system, typically made from thick duffel cloth. The toggles, usually horn or wood with rope loops, provide a distinctive closure. Originating as a navy and fisherman’s outerwear in the 19th century, the duffle coat became a staple in military and civilian fashion. Modern versions vary in length and color but retain the characteristic hood and toggled front, and the term “duffle” is used in several varieties of heavy wool outerwear, sometimes spelled duffel.
