Drumkeepers are custodians responsible for the care and readiness of drums in a group or ritual context. They oversee tuning, head replacement, cleaning, and storage; manage equipment inventory; coordinate transport and setup; assist percussionists with instrument selection; and perform light repairs or liaise with technicians.

In marching bands, drum corps, orchestras, and cultural ceremonies, drumkeepers ensure instruments are in playable condition before rehearsals and performances. They may select drumheads, monitor humidity and temperature to protect wood shells, tighten lugs to match required pitches, and maintain spares such as sticks, mallets, skins, and hardware. They often work closely with drum majors or conductors and can be responsible for the safe transport of drums between venues.

In cultural and religious contexts, drums may be regarded as sacred or ceremonial objects. Drumkeepers in these traditions safeguard the drums, preserve local playing practices, and may lead or supervise ritual rhythms. The term can refer to individuals who either perform on drums or act as stewards of the instruments’ symbolic significance.

Training and standards for drumkeepers vary, but commonly include knowledge of instrument construction, tuning, maintenance, and safe handling. Many learn through involvement in groups, apprenticeships, or formal percussion technician programs. While not universally used as a formal title, the role of drumkeeper is widely recognized wherever percussion hygiene, reliability, and tradition are valued.
