Draftspeople focus on accuracy, clarity, and compliance with relevant codes and standards.

Typical duties include interpreting sketches and specifications, creating 2D drawings and 3D models, detailing parts and assemblies, dimensioning and specifying materials, finishes, tolerances, and allowable deviations. They prepare drawings for permits, construction, and shop fabrication, and revise plans as designs evolve. They coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and suppliers to resolve conflicts and ensure constructability.

Skills and tools include proficiency with computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or MicroStation, as well as 3D modeling and BIM workflows. Draftspeople must understand geometric tolerances, material properties, construction or manufacturing processes, and applicable codes or standards. Strong communication and organization are essential to produce clear, reproducible drawings and documentation.

Education and career paths vary. Many draftspeople hold a two-year technical associate degree or a certificate in architectural or mechanical drafting, sometimes obtained through apprenticeships. Some advance to designer or engineering roles with additional education. Certification or licensing is required in some jurisdictions or specialized fields.

The role has evolved from manual drafting with pencils and ink to digital drafting and building information modeling (BIM). Standards such as ISO 128 and the ANSI/ISO guidelines govern drawing conventions and notation. Draftspeople work in architectural firms, engineering consultancies, construction companies, or manufacturing settings, supporting design teams through detailed, build-ready documentation.
