The origins of diagramming lie in engineering, science, and cartography, where diagrams summarized measurements and designs. In the 20th century, standardized notations emerged for specific domains, such as flowcharts and circuit diagrams, and later UML, BPMN, and entity–relationship models provided formal grammars for software and data representations.

Common diagram types include flowcharts for processes, organizational charts for roles and reporting lines, data flow diagrams for information movement, entity-relationship diagrams for databases, UML diagrams for software design, circuit diagrams for electronics, floor plans for spaces, and mind maps for idea generation. Many diagram types are domain-specific, while others are more general, and a diagram’s usefulness often rests on adhering to a consistent notation and clear labeling.

Creation proceeds from defining purpose and audience to selecting a diagram type, gathering elements and relationships, choosing a notation, drafting the diagram, and iterating after stakeholder review. Effective diagrams emphasize clarity, consistency, accuracy, and minimalism, with clear connections, labeled components, and avoidance of unnecessary detail.

Tools range from pencil and paper to specialized software such as Visio, Lucidchart, Draw.io, and other diagram editors. Good practice includes standardizing symbols, minimizing line crossings, using legible typography, and testing diagrams with users or teammates to ensure they communicate the intended message.
