Devicelevel refers to the lowest layer of software and firmware that directly controls or communicates with a hardware device. In computing, it typically encompasses firmware embedded in the device itself, the device drivers or kernel modules that drive the hardware, and the low-level I/O subsystems that translate software requests into hardware actions. The devicelevel layer sits between higher-level applications and the hardware, and is responsible for initializing devices, managing resources (such as buffers and DMA channels), handling interrupts, and implementing power-management policies. It also enforces basic access control and error reporting to higher layers.

In practice, devicelevel interfaces include hardware registers, control scripts, device trees or ACPI tables, and vendor-provided firmware updates. On general-purpose operating systems, devicelevel code runs in privileged mode and interacts with the rest of the kernel or firmware via well-defined interfaces. In embedded and microcontroller environments, the devicelevel code often comprises the sole software that configures peripherals like UART, SPI, I2C, timers, and sensors.

Firmware updates at the devicelevel are common and pose challenges for integrity and supply-chain security.
