Dermolipomas are benign tumors composed of mature adipose tissue that arise in the subcutaneous layer of the skin. They are distinct from lipomas, which typically occur deeper within the subcutaneous tissue or even in the muscle. Dermolipomas are characterized by their location within the dermis, the layer of skin beneath the epidermis.

These tumors are generally slow-growing and asymptomatic. They often present as soft, movable subcutaneous nodules. The color of the overlying skin may be normal or slightly discolored. While most dermolipomas are solitary, multiple occurrences are possible. They can appear anywhere on the body, but are more commonly found on the trunk and extremities.

The exact cause of dermolipomas is unknown. They are believed to arise from a proliferation of fat cells within the dermis. There is no known genetic predisposition or environmental factor strongly associated with their development.

Diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination and by observing the characteristic appearance and feel of the lesion. In some cases, imaging studies like ultrasound or MRI might be used to further characterize the lesion, though this is often unnecessary for a definitive diagnosis. Histological examination of a biopsy or excised specimen confirms the diagnosis, revealing mature adipocytes.

Treatment is usually not required unless the dermolipoma causes cosmetic concern or is in a location prone to irritation or trauma. Surgical excision is the definitive treatment, resulting in complete removal of the tumor. Recurrence after complete excision is rare. Dermolipomas have no malignant potential.
