Deprogrammers, also known as cult interventionists or exit counselors, are individuals who assist people in leaving what are described as high-control groups, commonly referred to as cults. The practice emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s in response to concerns about the psychological manipulation and undue influence experienced by members of certain religious and social groups.

The methodology employed by deprogrammers varies. Historically, it involved intensive, sometimes involuntary, sessions designed to break down a person's beliefs and encourage them to question their involvement in the group. This approach often involved confronting the individual with information about the group's practices and leadership, and creating a supportive environment for them to reconsider their commitment.

However, the practice of deprogramming has been a subject of considerable controversy and ethical debate. Critics argue that it can be coercive, infringe upon individual liberties and freedom of thought, and can be psychologically damaging to the individual. Concerns have also been raised about the effectiveness and potential for abuse within the deprogramming industry.

In recent decades, there has been a shift towards more voluntary and less confrontational methods, often termed "exit counseling." This approach emphasizes providing information, fostering critical thinking, and supporting the individual's decision-making process, rather than forceful intervention. Many former deprogrammers have adopted these less adversarial techniques. The term "deprogrammer" itself is often used with caution due to its historical association with more forceful tactics.
