A danceband is a musical ensemble that performs dance music for social dancing, often at ballrooms, clubs, weddings, and festivals. Dancebands are characterized by a steady rhythmic drive, accessible melodies, and arrangements designed to accompany dancing rather than concert listening.

A typical small- to mid-sized danceband includes a rhythm section—piano or keyboard, bass, and drums—and a horn or melodic section, such as saxophones, trumpets, and trombones, with guitars or keyboards for harmony. Some bands focus on a core set of tunes and rely on a vocalist to carry songs; others are primarily instrumental. In some modern formations, electronic keyboards and backing tracks supplement live players.

Repertoire and function: Dancebands perform a range of dances in various genres, including waltz, foxtrot, tango, polka, cha-cha, rumba, samba, and later swing and contemporary dance music. Repertoires are tailored to the venue and dancers’ preferences, with arrangements aimed at maintaining a steady tempo and smooth transitions between numbers.

History and regional usage: The concept emerged in the early 20th century and rose to prominence during the swing era in the United States and in Europe. In German-speaking countries the term Tanzband is common, referring to professional ensembles that play ballroom dance music at events. In many regions, dancebands were the primary source of live dance music before the widespread popularity of disco, rock, and club DJs.

Contemporary usage: Today, dancebands continue to perform at weddings, clubs, and festivals, often in flexible formats or as function bands that adapt to client needs. Some ensembles preserve traditional repertoires, while others blend classic dance tunes with contemporary pop.
