Ballroom refers to two related concepts: a large, formal room designed for dancing and the social dances historically performed in such spaces. As a room, a ballroom is typically a ceremonial or event venue in hotels, theaters, palaces, or civic buildings, sized to accommodate many dancers and spectators. As a dance style category, ballroom dance describes the standardized, partner-based dances traditionally performed in these rooms.

Architecture and design: Ballrooms usually feature a sprung wooden floor or other resilient surface, high ceilings, acoustic treatment, and ample lighting. Walls may be ornamented with mirrors and decorative panels. A raised stage or dais, a formal seating area, a dance floor of ample square footage, and a well-tuned sound system are common characteristics intended to support movement, music, and social interaction.

History: The ballroom originated in European aristocratic courts in the 17th–18th centuries and evolved into a central feature of social life. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, ballrooms in urban hotels, palaces, and concert venues hosted formal dances that articulated class and etiquette. In the late 20th century, ballroom dance also became a formal sport with standardized styles and competitive events.

Dances and organization: Ballroom dancing is typically divided into Standard (also called Smooth in some regions) and Latin categories. Standard dances include the waltz, Viennese waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep; Latin dances include cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive. Contemporary ballroom activity encompasses social dancing, staged performances, and international competitions organized by bodies such as the World DanceSport Federation and national associations.
