Cystadenoma is a benign cystic tumor that arises from glandular tissue. These tumors are characterized by their cystic nature, meaning they contain fluid-filled sacs. They can occur in various organs of the body, with common locations including the ovary, pancreas, and liver. The exact cause of cystadenoma formation is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve genetic mutations or developmental abnormalities in the glandular cells.

Symptoms associated with cystadenoma vary depending on the organ affected and the size of the tumor. In many cases, smaller cystadenomas are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during medical imaging for other reasons. Larger tumors may cause symptoms such as pain, pressure, or a palpable mass. Ovarian cystadenomas, for instance, can lead to pelvic pain, bloating, or menstrual irregularities. Pancreatic cystadenomas might present with abdominal pain, jaundice, or weight loss.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. The cystic nature and appearance on imaging help differentiate cystadenomas from other types of tumors. Definitive diagnosis often requires a biopsy and histopathological examination to confirm the benign nature of the tumor.

Treatment for cystadenoma depends on its location, size, and any symptoms it is causing. Small, asymptomatic cystadenomas may be monitored without intervention. Larger or symptomatic tumors are usually treated with surgical removal. The prognosis for cystadenomas is generally excellent following complete surgical excision, as they are benign and do not typically metastasize. However, regular follow-up may be recommended to monitor for recurrence or the development of new cysts.
