In engineering and technology, fluid-filled components include dampers and vibration isolators, hydraulic accumulators, and cooling channels in electronic equipment. The liquid provides energy dissipation through viscous flow and pressure drop, and can also transmit forces or heat efficiently. Fluid-filled seismic bearings and mufflers use the incompressibility and damping of fluids to limit motion or reduce noise.

In medical and biological contexts, the term describes structures and devices that contain fluid, such as fluid-filled sacs, chambers, or reservoirs. Medical implants and catheters may use fluid-filled compartments to regulate pressure or to deliver medicines, while ultrasound and diagnostic tools may rely on fluid-filled cavities for coupling or imaging.

Advantages of fluid-filled designs include enhanced damping, smoother force transmission, and improved thermal management. Challenges include the risk of leakage, contamination, and changes in performance with temperature and aging of the fluid. Seals, containment, and compatibility with the fill fluid are important design considerations.
