Crossbreeding is the deliberate mating of individuals from different breeds, varieties, or populations to create offspring that combine traits from both lines. In plants this is a common method for developing new cultivars; in animals it is used to improve performance or adapt traits. When crosses occur between different species, the term hybridization is usually used, and the resulting offspring are often infertile or sterile, as in mules (horse x donkey) or ligers (lion x tiger).

Purposes of crossbreeding include increasing heterosis, or hybrid vigor, and combining favorable traits such as growth rate, milk yield, disease resistance, fertility, or climate tolerance. Crossbreeding can also help restore vigor to inbred populations, widen the genetic base, or introduce new characteristics. It may be used to balance productivity with other considerations such as temperament or adaptability.

Common methods include outcrossing (mating unrelated individuals within or across breeds), backcrossing (crossing a hybrid back to one parent line), and rotational or composite breeding programs designed to retain genetic diversity across generations. In crops, F1 hybrids are produced by controlled crosses and often exhibit strong vigor, while breeders may also develop open-pollinated or synthetic varieties.

Examples span agriculture and horticulture: crossbreeding cattle or sheep to improve meat, milk, or wool traits; crops such as corn, wheat, or vegetables where hybrids or varieties blend disease resistance with yield and quality. In some cases, crossbreeding aims to combine ornamental or functional traits, such as flower color and hardiness.

Risks and limitations include potential loss of breed identity, reliance on specific breeding stock, and reduced fertility in some hybrids. There can be ethical or welfare concerns, ecological risks from unintended introgression into wild populations, and regulatory or labeling considerations in certain jurisdictions.
