A coxswain is the member of a rowing crew or small maritime boat who is responsible for steering the vessel and directing its crew. The term is used in both competitive rowing and naval or harbor service. The role combines navigation, race management, and leadership, with a focus on safety, coordination, and communication.

In rowing, the coxswain normally sits in the stern facing the rowers (in some boats the cox may sit in the bow). In maritime use, the coxswain is a petty officer or senior crew member in charge of a ship’s small boats, such as launches and lifeboats. The coxswain commands the boat’s crew, handles navigation within operational areas, and coordinates with the ship’s bridge or shore party. The role can include discipline, logistics, and ceremonial duties, depending on the vessel and navy or fleet practices.
