Computermisuse refers to the improper, illegal, or unauthorized use of computer systems, networks, or data. It encompasses deliberate actions by individuals or organizations that compromise confidentiality, integrity, or availability of information, or that exploit computing resources for improper purposes. The term covers activities ranging from unauthorized access to systems to the manipulation of data, distribution of malware, or illicit use of shared resources.

Common forms include unauthorized intrusion into computers or networks, theft or alteration of data, destruction or corruption of files, denial-of-service attacks, software piracy, and the spread of malware or phishing attempts. Misuse can occur by outsiders or by insiders such as employees who violate company policies or legal obligations.

Legal and policy frameworks vary by jurisdiction but generally criminalize unauthorized access, data theft, and disruption of services. In several countries, statutes such as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (US) and the Computer Misuse Act (UK) provide penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment. Civil remedies and regulatory penalties may apply for privacy violations or breach of contract.

Prevention and response include implementing access controls, authentication, least-privilege principles, encryption, audit logging, security monitoring, incident response planning, regular software updates, backups, and user education about safe computing practices and acceptable use policies.
