Bunions, medically known as hallux valgus, are bony bumps that form on the joint on the outside of the base of the big toe. This condition occurs when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get bigger and stick out. The skin over the bunion may be red and sore. Bunions can be caused by inherited foot types, abnormal foot function, or foot injuries. They can also be exacerbated by wearing shoes that are too narrow, too shallow, or too high-heeled, which force the big toe into an unnatural position.

Symptoms of a bunion include a bulging bone on the outside of the base of the big toe, swelling, redness, pain or tenderness in the joint, difficulty moving the big toe, and corns or calluses where the first and second toes rub together. While bunions can develop at any age, they are more common in women and often begin to appear during middle age.

Treatment for bunions generally focuses on relieving pain and preventing the deformity from worsening. Non-surgical treatments include wearing wider, more comfortable shoes, using padding or shoe inserts to relieve pressure, and taking pain relievers. In some cases, bunions may require surgery to correct the alignment of the toe joint. The severity of the bunion and the degree of pain and discomfort will determine the best course of treatment.
