Bunions, medically known as hallux valgus, are bony bumps that form on the joint on the outside of the base of the big toe. This condition occurs when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get bigger and stick out. The skin over the bunion may be red and sore. Bunions can be caused by inherited foot types, abnormal foot function, or foot injuries.
