Bulimia-related refers to signs, symptoms, and consequences linked to bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder defined by recurrent binge eating and compensatory behaviors intended to prevent weight gain.

Core behaviors include episodes of uncontrollable binge eating and subsequent actions such as self-induced vomiting, laxative or diuretic use, fasting, or excessive exercise. Diagnostic criteria commonly require these patterns at least once weekly for three months and a distorted weight/shape influence on self-esteem.

Medical complications can be serious, including electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, dental erosion, esophageal and gastric problems, stomach ulcers, and menstrual irregularities. Comorbidity with depression, anxiety, and substance use is common and can worsen prognosis.

Risk factors are multifactorial, involving genetics, neurobiology, psychosocial stress, dieting history, perfectionism, and cultural pressures around body image.

Treatment is multidisciplinary. Psychotherapy (notably cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy), nutritional rehabilitation, and medical monitoring are mainstays. Pharmacotherapy with fluoxetine or other SSRIs may help reduce binge-purge behaviors in adults. Early intervention improves outcomes; treatment plans tailor to medical stability and relapse risk.

Prognosis varies. Many individuals recover with treatment, though bulimia-related health effects can persist without care. Public health efforts focus on awareness, screening, and reducing stigma to promote help-seeking.
