A bomblet is a small explosive submunition designed to be dispersed from a larger munition, such as a cluster bomb, artillery rocket, or mine dispenser. Each bomblet is intended to detonate or release its payload to achieve effects across a wider area. Depending on its design, a bomblet may be a fragmentation device, anti-personnel, anti-armor, incendiary, smoke, or illumination type. Some are designed to detonate on impact, while others use timed fuzes or airburst timing to maximize coverage.

Bomblets are packed inside a larger delivery weapon and released in flight or upon a mechanical discharge. As the parent munition opens, the bomblets scatter over the target area and arm in accordance with their fuzes. Their effects are typically localized to a broad zone rather than a single point, making them suited to area suppression or saturation targets. Design variations include self-destruct or self-deactivation features intended to reduce unexploded ordnance, though many bomblets still pose risks after a conflict ends.

Post-conflict hazards are a central humanitarian concern. A significant share of bomblets fail to explode on impact and remain dangerous unexploded ordnance (UXO) for years or decades, posing risks to civilians, especially children. Clearance requires trained teams, specialized equipment, and careful, controlled disposal procedures to reduce casualties and enable reconstruction.

Legal and policy context includes international efforts to regulate or ban cluster munitions. The Convention on Cluster Munitions, opened in 2008, prohibits use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions and requires clearance of affected areas and assistance to victims. Not all states are parties, and debates remain about the military effectiveness, humanitarian impact, and alternatives to cluster-based weapons.
