Body-consciousness refers to the awareness, perception, and attitudes a person holds toward their own body. It encompasses internal bodily states (interoception), perception and control of movement and posture (proprioception and body schema), and external aspects such as appearance (body image). While related, these components describe distinct processes: interoceptive monitoring of hunger, pain, or heartbeat; sensorimotor awareness of position and movement; and the cognitive-emotional representation of the body in social contexts.
