Blickdicht describes a property of materials that prevents seeing through them. In German usage, it denotes opacity or non-transparency, where light may be reduced or blocked and visibility is restricted. The term is commonly applied to textiles, plastics, coatings and glass surfaces, and is often used in contrast to transparent or translucent materials.

The opacity of a material depends on several factors, including its composition, weave or structure, thickness, color and surface finish. It is usually assessed by measuring how much visible light passes through the material, expressed as transmittance, or by determining the optical density. Higher optical density corresponds to lower transmittance and a more blickdicht result. Modern testing can involve spectrophotometers or other photometric instruments to quantify light transmission across the visible spectrum.

Manufacturing methods to achieve blickdicht properties vary. In textiles, dense weaves, high thread counts, thick fibers, dark dyes and special finishes can reduce light transmission. Coatings, laminates or multilayer constructions are common in films and window coverings to enhance opacity. In glass and plastics, surface treatments, frits, films or pigments are used to obtain blickdichte surfaces.

Typical applications include privacy in clothing and upholstery, window coverings such as curtains and blinds, packaging that conceals contents, and architectural or display materials where light control is desired. Considerations when selecting blickdichte materials include not only opacity but also color stability, breathability (in textiles), UV protection, durability and recyclability.
