Biskopsstav is a ceremonial staff carried by a bishop in many Christian traditions, including the Church of Sweden. The term combines biskop (bishop) and stav (staff) and denotes a symbol of episcopal office, authority, and pastoral care.

Design and construction vary by tradition, but the staff is typically tall and ends in a crook or curved head, reminiscent of a shepherd’s staff. It may be made of wood, silver, gold, or other metals and is often richly decorated with religious motifs, heraldry, or diocesan insignia. Lengths commonly range from about 1.5 to 2 meters, though variations exist between rites and jurisdictions.

Function and use: The biskopsstav is used in liturgical ceremonies, processions, ordinations, consecrations, and episcopal installations. It is usually carried by the bishop during official events and, in many places, presented or carried before the bishop in processions as a visible sign of his governance and spiritual leadership. In some communities, younger clergy or deacons assist in handling the staff during rituals.

History and context: The crosier or pastoral staff emerged in the early Christian era as a symbol of the bishop’s role as a shepherd of the flock and steward of the diocese.
