Bioluminescent systems, especially luciferase reporters, are widely used in biotechnology and medical research to monitor gene expression and cellular processes in real time. External uses include environmental sensing, educational displays, and, in some cases, decorative lighting, though practical use typically relies on isolated enzymes rather than whole organisms.
