Bioarchaeologists are scientists who study human remains from archaeological contexts to understand past populations. They work at the intersection of anthropology and archaeology, applying methods from biology, chemistry, and related fields to reconstruct health, diet, life history, and social behavior in ancient communities.

The core methods include osteology to determine age at death, sex, stature, and skeletal condition; palaeopathology to identify disease, injury, and stress indicators; stable isotope analysis (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, strontium) to infer diet, geographic origin, and mobility; ancient DNA analysis to explore ancestry, population dynamics, and kinship; and dating techniques such as radiocarbon methods. Noninvasive imaging, like CT scanning, allows detailed examination of internal structures without damaging remains.

Research questions commonly address demographic structure, health and nutrition, infectious and noninfectious diseases, work and activity patterns, migration, and social inequality as inferred from burial practices and skeletal markers. The goal is to build evidence-based reconstructions of how people lived, how their bodies responded to environment and culture, and how societies organized health, labor, and care in the past.

Ethical and legal considerations are central. Bioarchaeologists collaborate with descendant communities, follow laws and guidelines concerning the treatment and repatriation of remains, and prioritize transparent reporting, data sharing, and respect for cultural beliefs. This field often operates within museums, universities, and cultural resource management firms, contributing to heritage education and the broader understanding of human history.
