Betaalstroom is a Dutch term used in finance and treasury to describe the flow of payments through an organization over a specific period. It encompasses all outflows and inflows of money, including supplier payments, payroll, taxes, customer receipts, and other financial transactions. The concept is closely related to cash flow in that it reflects how payment timing and volumes affect liquidity and working capital.

The typical payment process involves several steps. A payment instruction or betalingsopdracht is generated, often within an enterprise resource planning (ERP) or treasury system. These instructions are consolidated into a payments file (betalingsbestand) and transmitted to the bank or payment service provider. After processing and settlement, the payment status is updated to completed, pending, or failed. In practice, organizations manage both inbound receipts and outbound payments to maintain sufficient liquidity and optimize payment timings.

Management and optimization focus on aligning the betaalstroom with forecasted cash positions. Treasury teams use cash-flow forecasting, batch processing, and payment scheduling to improve liquidity, reduce banking costs, and optimize credit lines. Strategies may include timing of payments, use of early payment discounts, and centralized vs. decentralized payment processing.

Systems and compliance play important roles. Banks, ERP systems, and specialized treasury management systems automate betaalstroom handling. Compliance considerations include anti-fraud controls, authorization workflows, and adherence to regulations governing payments and data privacy. In Europe, SEPA-based transfers and, increasingly, instant payments influence the speed and interoperability of the betaalstroom across borders.

Terminology varies; betaalstroom is sometimes used interchangeably with betalingsstroom, and is distinct from the broader concept of cash receipts (ontvangststroom).
