Barndrain is a term used in rural construction to describe drainage features designed for barns. It encompasses systems intended to manage surface runoff around an agricultural building and protect foundations and adjacent facilities such as manure handling areas. The term is informal and regional; there is no single standardized specification for barndrain. In practice, it may refer to perimeter trench drains, channel drains, or broader drainage schemes integrated with gutters, downspouts, and subsurface outlets.

Design and components: Common barndrain installations include trench or channel drains with grates, outlet piping, and sometimes a sump or cesspit. Outlets may connect to subsurface drainage, stormwater systems, or filtration beds. Materials range from reinforced concrete to polymer composites, chosen for load, climate, and budget. Proper grading directs water away from the foundation and away from livestock areas to reduce mud and erosion.

Construction and maintenance: Installation requires accurate grading, frost protection, and practical access for cleaning. Maintenance involves removing debris from grates, flushing lines, and inspecting joints for leaks. In many farms the barndrain is part of an overall site drainage plan that handles yard runoff, driveways, and manure management.
