Popular examples include mobile AR games and real-time information overlays for complex procedures. AR is used to assist professionals with remote collaboration, guided assembly, and step-by-step training, while consumer devices provide contextual information, wayfinding, and interactive experiences in shopping, tourism, and museums.

Development and adoption have grown with advances in sensors, processing power, and computer vision technologies, such as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Challenges include latency, accurate depth perception, field of view, content creation, and privacy concerns. The field is evolving toward spatial computing and mixed reality, with ongoing research in wearables, interoperability, and integration with artificial intelligence.
