Archipelagos geographic is an interdisciplinary field concerned with the spatial patterns, formation, dynamics, and human use of archipelagos—the chains, clusters, or groups of islands separated by sea.

Archipelago formation occurs through tectonic plate movements, volcanic activity that creates oceanic islands, reef-building and subsidence that form atolls, and historical sea-level changes that expose or submerge land. Two broad typologies are continental archipelagos, linked to remnants of continental shelves such as the Aegean Sea, and oceanic archipelagos, formed primarily by volcanic activity on oceanic crust, such as Hawaii and the Galápagos.

Archipelagos are distributed most densely in the Pacific, with large systems in Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and New Zealand; the Caribbean and Mediterranean hosts several archipelagos, and the Indian Ocean includes Madagascar and the Seychelles. Characteristics include high island counts, varied island sizes, and complex sea routes that influence climate, oceanography, and connectivity.

Ecologically, isolation fosters high endemism and distinct ecosystems, including tropical forests on larger islands and coral reefs around many coastlines. Human activity concentrates on a subset of islands and poses pressures such as deforestation, invasive species, overfishing, and tourism. Climate change and sea-level rise threaten low-lying islets and reef systems.

Governance in archipelagic regions often involves specific maritime frameworks, including baselines and rights under international law. UNCLOS recognizes archipelagic states that draw straight baselines around a group of islands to delineate internal waters, territorial seas, and exclusive economic zones. Research methods rely on GIS, remote sensing, bathymetry, and field surveys to map land-water interfaces and plan sustainable use.
