Reefbuilding is the biogenic process by which organisms construct reef habitats. The most prominent reef builders are scleractinian corals in the class Anthozoa, which secrete calcium carbonate skeletons that accumulate to form the reef framework. Other organisms, including coralline algae, sponges, bryozoans, and tube worms, also contribute to reef structure and stability.

In corals, individual polyps live in colonies and rely on symbiotic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) to supply energy through photosynthesis. This symbiosis drives calcification and rapid vertical growth in shallow, sunlit waters. Reef growth occurs when skeletal deposition outpaces erosion and subsidence, a balance influenced by temperature, light, salinity, and nutrient levels. Corals reproduce sexually and asexually, enabling both genetic diversity and local recovery after disturbance.

Reefs display distinct morphologies such as fringing reefs along coastlines, barrier reefs separated by lagoons, and atolls encircling lagoons, as well as patch reefs in lagoonal or shelf settings. Coral reefs generally require warm, clear, shallow water with low nutrients and stable salinity; they are most productive in tropical to subtropical regions and can extend to depths of tens of meters.

Ecologically, reefs support high biodiversity and provide ecosystem services including coastal protection from storms, fisheries habitat, tourism value, and carbon storage in accumulated CaCO3. They are sensitive indicators of ocean health and are affected by climate change and local stressors.

Threats include ocean warming and acidification, pollution, sedimentation, destructive fishing, and coastal development. Responses include marine protected areas, management of land-based sources of pollution, restoration projects (such as coral gardening and larval propagation), and reef-friendly tourism practices. Effective reef rebuilding depends on reducing local stressors while addressing global climate impacts.
