The metal retains its high reflectivity, low density and resistance to oxidation, which makes it attractive for surface applications.

The material has a characteristic lustrous appearance, a silvery-white colour, and a smooth texture that reflects light. Its mechanical properties allow it to be folded, bent or hammered to different shapes while maintaining its structural integrity. Aluminium leaf is naturally non‑allergenic and does not contain mercury or heavy metals that pose hazards in contact with human skin.

Its primary uses are in decorative arts, where it is applied to paper, canvas or wooden panels for gilding, mural work and architectural accents. In the food industry, aluminium leaf is utilised to preserve steamed and smoked foods, to conceal and retain moisture, and to convey a premium feel to confectionery and beverages. The material is also found in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and craft sectors for packaging, coating, and aesthetic embellishment.

Manufacturers typically grind the material to a fine structure to minimise tearing during handling. Aluminium leaf remains recyclable, and recycling processes can recover the metal to be reused in new products, thereby reducing the need for fresh aluminium extraction. The standard safety precautions for handling aluminium leave out high temperatures to prevent overheating or burn injury.
