Alloythat is a term used in materials science to describe a class of multi-principal-element alloys designed to combine high strength, hardness, and thermal stability with reasonable ductility. It denotes a broad family rather than a single composition, with compositions typically including five or more principal elements in near-equal proportions. Common design spaces for alloythat include Ni, Co, Cr, Fe, and Mn with additions of Al, Ti, or Nb, as well as Fe-Cr-Ni–based systems, enabling varied solid-solution or two-phase microstructures.

Microstructure and properties: The high-entropy concept behind alloythat often yields a solid-solution matrix that can be face-centered cubic (fcc) or body-centered cubic (bcc), or a mixed microstructure. These materials can exhibit high yield and tensile strengths, good hardness, and elevated-temperature capability, along with wear resistance. Processing and heat treatment strongly influence ductility and fracture toughness, making the balance between strength and toughness a key design consideration.

Processing: Manufacturing methods for alloythat include arc melting with homogenization, vacuum induction melting, powder metallurgy, and additive manufacturing. Post-processing thermomechanical treatments are commonly applied to tailor phase fractions, grain size, and residual stresses to achieve targeted properties.

Applications and status: Alloythat remains largely an area of active research and development, with potential use in aerospace, power generation, tooling, and corrosion-resistant components. Widespread industrial deployment is limited by cost, processing complexity, and the need for long-term performance data, but interest persists in environments that demand high-temperature strength and wear resistance.
