Microstructures refer to the arrangement and features of a material's internal constituents as observed at the micrometer or smaller scale. They encompass grains and grain boundaries, phases (primary and secondary), precipitates, porosity, inclusions, and defects such as dislocations and twins. The microstructure is distinct from the crystal lattice and from the macroscopic shape of the part, yet it largely determines mechanical, thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties.

Microstructures are revealed by metallographic preparation and imaging techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction. Etching is often used to highlight grain boundaries and phase contrasts.

Microstructure forms during solidification and evolves through processing: deformation, annealing, quenching, tempering, and aging. Cooling rate, alloy composition, and heat-treatment schedule control grain size, phase fractions, precipitation, and defect density.

Different materials exhibit characteristic microstructures: metals may show grains with martensitic, pearlitic, bainitic structures; cast irons show graphite or nodular graphite; ceramics may have polycrystalline grains bound by grain boundaries; polymers exhibit crystalline and amorphous domains.

Relation to properties: finer grains generally improve strength and toughness (Hall-Petch), while large grains may reduce creep resistance or lead to anisotropy. Precipitates can strengthen alloys by hindering dislocations. Microstructure is a primary lever for tailoring performance in engineering materials.
