Training and regulation: Requirements vary by country; most jurisdictions require completed training in an accredited program and licensure or certification to practice; in the United States, practitioners pursue an acupuncture program and may seek certification through the NCCAOM and state licensing boards; in the United Kingdom, practitioners may register with regulatory bodies such as the CNHC. Ongoing continuing education is common.

Practice setting and scope: Acupuncturists work in private clinics, integrative medicine clinics, hospitals, or multidisciplinary teams; they may collaborate with physicians, chiropractors, or other therapists. They treat a range of conditions, and patients seek acupuncture for chronic pain, nausea, stress, and other symptoms, though efficacy evidence varies by condition.

Evidence and safety: Research on acupuncture yields mixed results; some conditions show modest benefit beyond sham procedures in certain trials, while others do not. When performed with sterile, disposable needles and proper technique, acupuncture is generally considered safe; adverse events are rare but can include infection, puncture injuries, or punctured organs, mainly when performed by untrained practitioners.
