The term derives from the Spanish word “acuchillar,” meaning “to stab or to anchor,” and describes a small metal plate or bar that is bolted or screwed into the climbing wall. Once fixed, the acuchow is clipped to a climbing rope or quickdraw via a standard cordelette or harness attachment point, providing a secure anchor for the climber.

The design of an acuchow usually incorporates a flat surface on one side to accommodate an eye or hook, and a protruding bar or loop on the opposite side that serves as the attachment point. Some varieties are built with a swivel or T‑shaped configuration, allowing for different rope orientations and reducing tension on the anchor.
