ZinkTitan

ZinkTitan is a zinc-titanium alloy developed in the field of advanced structural materials. The name reflects its primary constituent elements, zinc and titanium, and its intended combination of low density with improved mechanical and corrosion properties relative to single-element metals.

ZinkTitan alloys are formulated with a majority of titanium and zinc in varying ratios, typically with trace additions of elements such as aluminum or iron to refine microstructure. The alloy is noted for a relatively low density compared with titanium and improved ductility over pure zinc. It forms a stable surface oxide that contributes to corrosion resistance and can exhibit favorable biocompatibility in contact with body fluids, properties that attract interest for medical and implant applications. Mechanical properties such as yield strength and fatigue resistance are composition-dependent but are generally suited for lightweight structural uses in research programs.

Manufacturing methods include conventional melting and alloying followed by hot working, extrusion, or powder metallurgy; additive manufacturing techniques such as selective laser melting have been explored for ZinkTitan components. Post-processing heat treatment and surface finishing are used to tailor grain structure and wear resistance.

Applications under investigation include temporary or load-bearing biomedical implants, where controlled degradation or long-term stability is desirable, as well as lightweight aerospace and automotive components. The material is not widely adopted in commercial products as of the present, and most information comes from academic studies and limited pilot production. Ongoing research focuses on corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, corrosion-fatigue, and the long-term performance of ZinkTitan in various environments.
