Warmteschok refers to the physiological response of an organism to a sudden increase in environmental temperature. This stress can trigger a cascade of physiological changes aimed at maintaining homeostasis, particularly core body temperature.

In humans, warmteschok can manifest as heat exhaustion or, in severe cases, heatstroke. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, and profuse sweating. As the body overheats, vital organs can be damaged. This condition is particularly dangerous for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, infants, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those engaging in strenuous physical activity in hot conditions.

The body attempts to dissipate heat through various mechanisms. Vasodilation, the widening of blood vessels, increases blood flow to the skin, allowing heat to radiate away. Sweating is another crucial cooling mechanism, as the evaporation of perspiration from the skin surface removes heat. However, these mechanisms can become overwhelmed when the ambient temperature is very high, or humidity is excessive, hindering evaporative cooling.

Prevention is key and involves gradual acclimatization to warmer temperatures, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day, and seeking cool environments. Recognizing the early signs of warmteschok is vital for timely intervention and preventing more severe health consequences.
