Väsymisanalyysiä, often translated as fatigue analysis or fatigue assessment, is a crucial engineering discipline focused on understanding and predicting the failure of materials and structures subjected to cyclic or fluctuating loads. Unlike static analysis, which considers loads applied once, fatigue analysis deals with repeated stress applications that can lead to material weakening and eventual fracture, even if the peak stress remains below the material's yield strength.

The core principle behind väsymisanalyysiä is that every load cycle can cause microscopic damage. Over time, these small damages accumulate, leading to the formation and propagation of cracks. Eventually, these cracks grow to a critical size, causing the component to fail suddenly and catastrophically. This phenomenon is known as fatigue failure.

Several methods are employed in fatigue analysis. Stress-life (S-N) methods are commonly used for high-cycle fatigue, where the number of cycles to failure is large. This approach relates the applied stress amplitude to the number of cycles the material can withstand before failing. Strain-life (ε-N) methods are more appropriate for low-cycle fatigue, where stresses are higher and deformations are significant. Fracture mechanics approaches are also utilized, focusing on the behavior of existing cracks and their growth under cyclic loading.

Factors influencing fatigue life include the material properties, the magnitude and type of stress cycles, the presence of stress concentrations (like holes or sharp corners), environmental conditions (such as temperature and corrosion), and manufacturing processes. Accurate väsymisanalyysiä is essential in designing safe and reliable components for a wide range of applications, including aircraft, bridges, vehicles, and machinery, to prevent premature failure and ensure longevity.
