Fluctuating is the present participle of the verb fluctuate, and as an adjective it describes something that varies, alternates, or changes irregularly over time. The term derives from Latin fluctus "a wave" and fluctare "to wave" or "to move to and fro," connoting motion and change.

In science and statistics, fluctuations refer to deviations in a quantity as it evolves, such as prices, temperatures, or heart rate. Analysts use time series methods, moving averages, and volatility measures to describe and quantify fluctuations, including standard deviation, range, and spectral components.
