Traditionally exchanged during introductions in business or social settings, the card serves as a portable reminder of a person’s identity, role, and how to reach them. It also functions as a miniature branding tool for individuals and organizations.

A typical Visitenkarte includes the holder’s name, job title, company or organization, postal address, telephone number, email address, and website. It may also display a company logo, a professional photograph, social media handles, and a QR code or other digital link. The standard physical size in Germany is commonly 85 by 55 millimeters, though sizes vary by country and industry. Cards are often printed on smooth or textured paper with options ranging from matte to glossy finishes, and higher-quality stock is used to convey professionalism.

Historically, visiting cards emerged in Europe as calling cards and evolved into business cards with the growth of commercial culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In German-speaking regions they have long been used to facilitate introductions and the exchange of contact details in a discreet, social, and professional context.
