Veðurgeta, also known as weathering, refers to the gradual breakdown and alteration of rock and mineral materials on the Earth's surface through direct contact with atmospheric conditions. This natural process is primarily driven by physical, chemical, and biological factors, leading to the disintegration and decomposition of rocks over time.

Physical weathering, or mechanical weathering, involves the physical disintegration of rock without changing its chemical composition. Common mechanisms include freeze-thaw cycles, where water expands upon freezing and exerts pressure on rock cracks, eventually causing them to widen and break apart. Another factor is thermal expansion, where rocks expand and contract due to temperature fluctuations, leading to stress and fragmentation. Abrasion, such as that caused by wind-blown sand or moving water, also contributes to physical weathering by wearing down rock surfaces.

Chemical weathering, on the other hand, involves the transformation of rock minerals through chemical reactions. Water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and organic acids play significant roles in this process. For instance, oxidation occurs when minerals like iron react with oxygen, leading to rust formation. Hydrolysis involves the breakdown of minerals by reaction with water, often resulting in the formation of clay. Acid rain, caused by atmospheric pollutants, can accelerate chemical weathering by dissolving minerals and weakening rock structures.

Biological weathering occurs through the actions of living organisms, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. Plant roots can grow into rock cracks, exerting pressure and causing them to expand. Lichens and mosses secrete acids that chemically weather rock surfaces, while burrowing animals and humans can physically disrupt rock formations.
