Vevemønstre

Vevemønstre, or weaving patterns, are the designs visible on woven fabrics created by the arrangement of warp and weft threads according to a plan. Patterns may originate from the weave structure itself, from the color placement of the threads, or from both.

Structural patterns arise from how the threads interlace. Common structures include plain weave, twill (including herringbone), and satin weave. More complex fabrics such as damask, brocade, and jacquard weave patterns produce intricate motifs by controlling which yarns rise above others. Color patterns emerge when warp and/or weft are dyed differently and placed to form motifs, stripes, plaids, or checks. Ikat and resist-dyed weaves create distinctive edge effects or blurred motifs.

Pattern design often uses drafts and repeats. On traditional looms, patterning is achieved by specific threading orders and lifting plans; on Jacquard looms, punched cards or computerized sequences control a large array of interlacing. Historically, vevemønstre have conveyed cultural identity and status and have influenced textile trade and aesthetics across regions such as Scotland (tartans), the Middle East (damask fabrics), and Central Asia (ikat).

In modern production, weaving patterns continue to evolve with advances in loom technology and digital design tools, enabling both traditional motifs and highly complex, data-driven patterns.
