Versteifung

Versteifung is a German noun meaning the act or process of making something stiff or rigid. It describes a deliberate or natural increase in rigidity of a body, component, or tissue, often to improve stability, resist deformation, or immobilize motion. Versteifung can be achieved by mechanical means (reinforcing elements), chemical or physical means (hardening, bonding), or biological processes (tissue maturation).

In medicine, Versteifung commonly refers to immobilization or fusion of bones to eliminate movement at a joint, as in spinal fusion (Wirbelsäulenversteifung) or arthrodesis. Surgical approaches use implants such as screws, plates, rods, or bone grafts to create a stiff segment. In dentistry, Versteifung denotes splinting of loose teeth or stabilizing fractured teeth, either temporarily or permanently, to distribute bite forces and facilitate healing.

In engineering, Versteifung means adding stiffeners, braces, or ribs to increase a structure's resistance to bending or buckling. Examples include cross-bracing in frames, shear walls, stiffening rings on vessels, or stiffeners on panels and aircraft fuselages.
